Originally from England, Jill Carver moved to Austin, Texas in 2002. Following a twelve-year career as a curatorial research assistant at the National Portrait Gallery in London she now paints full-time. Believing that one should ‘grow where one is planted’, she has been fast to establish herself here and has become well known for her renderings of the Texas Hill Country, the Davis Mountains, and of the Big Bend region. Painting trips to Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah have further extended her knowledge of the Western landscape. She too is already winning recognition and awards for her work in national juried shows - a 'Jury's Top 50' and a ‘Judge’s Honorable Mention’ award at the Greenhouse Gallery's International Salon Show, 2006 and 2007, and Best of Show at Estes Park Plein Air 2007. The Art Academy Museum of Easton, MD, purchased one of her paintings for its permanent collection last year.
Her paintings have immediate visual impact. The canvases read well from a distance; then close up they dissolve into a series of brush-strokes clearly and confidently rendered. Knowledge and observation are essential elements of her working practice and to achieve this she spends a large proportion of her time painting on location – on both small and large canvases.
Throughout her life Jill has been committed to drawing and painting, it was something she just needed to do from a very early age (3!). After graduating from university, she was an artist in residence for a year at a school in York, England, before embarking upon her career at the National Portrait Gallery. Jill took a sabbatical from this position in 2001 to explore the idea of painting full-time. For four months she traveled and painted in New Zealand, living in a small van, often in remote places, but painting every day. The resulting successful exhibition of her work at the New Zealand Embassy in London convinced her to paint full-time.
